About Us:

Jr. Iron Chef VT 2008 is a an event planned by members of the Burlington Food Council as a statewide competition, fundraising, and awareness event for the Burlington School Food Project and VT FEED.  The competition gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience preparing and cooking nutritious foods.  We hope to encourage students to make healthy eating choices, and understand more about nutrition, fresh and local foods, the culinary arts, and school food systems.
Highlights from the 1st Annual Jr. Iron Chef Competition!

Thanks to Eva Sollberger and Seven Days for this great video!

30 teams came from all over Vermont to prepare delicious dishes using seasonal, local foods and compete for the title of Jr. Iron Chef VT!

Judges included Mark Bove, Bove’s Restaurant (did you see him on Throwdown with Bobby Flay on the Food Network?) Melissa Pasanen, Free Press Correspondent, and co-author of Cooking with Shelburne Farms, Kathy O’Brien, Survivor: Marquesas contestant, and many others.

The emcee was Sean Buchanan, Executive Chef at the Stowe Mountain Lodge.

There was live music, raffles and give-aways, food vendors, a Farmers' Market, sugar-on-snow, and so much more!

Vermont FEED and the Burlington School Food Project would like to thank our sponsors, participants, and the community for supporting the 1st Annual Jr. Iron Chef VT Competition on Saturday April 12, 2008 at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction, VT.  The competition was a wonderful success, and saw over 150 Vermont middle and high school students create delicious dishes using seasonal, local foods and change perceptions about school food.

Three awards were given in each age group: Best In Show, Most Creative, and Greatest Number/Best Use of Local Ingredients.  Check out the News page for the full list of winners, and more notes and highlights from the day!

Planning is on for the 2nd Annual Jr. Iron Chef VT!
Join us March 28, 2009 for an even bigger and better event - and maybe the chance to be the next Jr. Iron Chef VT!
